Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born on August 30, 1797 and died on February 1, 1851. She was a novelist, essayist and biographer, best known for Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus. Her other published works include historical novels: Valperga, The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck, and Falkner; and the travel memoir Rambles in Germany and Italy. This is her first posthumously published work, though her story and characters of Frankenstein have been revised and utilized in countless unauthorized works and adaptations.

I was anxiously awaiting the conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy from Stephen King after blasting through the first two books in the series. The way the second book ended I was expecting something completely different from what King delivered in this conclusion. This is definitely a departure from the rather gritty, real-world detective fiction that the previous two novels presented. Instead King re-entered some of the realms he presented in earlier works like Carrie and the Green Mile. Much more supernatural than parts one and two, but totally engrossing and exciting. The novel is long, as are most King books of late, but it's a rather quick read - hard to put down - just one more chapter. Obviously it won't make much sense if you haven't read the first two books even though King does a good job of refreshing your memory of what went on before. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

It just keeps coming back to that day at the job fair, and the Mercedes Massacre.Six years have passed since Brady Hartsfield drove a gray Mercedes into a crowd of desperate job seekers, killing eight and injuring many others. A year later, he ended up in a mental hospital, first in a coma, then awake, but with severe brain damage, enough to keep him from going to trial for that and the attempted murder of thousands.Now, in "End of Watch," retired detective and co-owner of the investigative agency Finders Keepers learns about a murder suicide that tangentially points back to Hartsfield. As more clues come to light, it seems clear that Hartsfield is behind a series of suicides and attempted suicides, but how can that be possible, with him in a mental ward in a near-vegetative state? Thousands of lives could be on the line if Hodges, now deathly thin and ailing, can't figure it out, and stop the suicides in time.Enough summary. This final book in the Bill Hodges Trilogy drew me right in. We find familiar and new characters we love and hate, all well-rounded with strong motivations. "End of Watch" adds a new element, psychic powers, likely brought on by an experimental drug, and it makes the story all the more terrifying.The theme of suicide comes back strongly in this novel, and King includes a real suicide hotline number, 1-800-273-TALK."End of Watch" is a satisfying conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy.

This was an excellent book. Faced paced, heartfelt, well written characters who made you feel like they were real, if only for a moment. It's not many books that run the gamut of emotions, but this one did. Even though I knew how the final scene would play out, it was still sad when it did. Every time I read a SK book I wonder if it's going to be his last. If this is his final book (he still talks retirement -- I think there's more King in Hodges than in a lot of his past characters) this would be the way to go out. Read this series ASAP and see if you don't get that feeling from it too.Thank you, Stephen King, for everything.Peace.

Let me be clear, I like Stephen King. I was slow to pick up Mr. Mercedes, however, because it just sounded like just another psycho killer mystery. Nonetheless , the genre busting style of the writing, and the quirky characters sucked me in. By the end of the first book, I was a begrudging admirer of the setup.I was even more surprised by Finders Keepers, the follow up. The divergence to a new storyline and set of characters for most of the book, coupled with a smooth integration of the original crew at the three-quarter mark was clever and seamless. This was easily my favorite of the trilogy.The end of Finders Keepers hinted pretty heavily where End of Watch would go. The writing was tight, and the characters were well developed, but the plot, for me, just wasn’t believable. I have accepted all kinds of fantastic stuff in Mr. King’s stories, but the notion of a comatose psycho killer projecting his consciousness into others to via a retro handheld video game jumped my shark.Not the best of the three.

Interesting series! Neither Mr. Mercedes nor Finders Keepers depended on Stephen King's talent for the supernatural...but both were terrifically suspenseful.In "End of Watch", King amped up the suspense--palpable throughout the novel--and threw in the stuff that made him famous...eerie supernatural occurrences, made utterly believable by his masterful writing.But, for me, the real treasures in End of Watch are King's characters. Bill, Jerome and Holly are some of the most realistic and endearing characters King has written, and during the course of the trilogy, you can feel them develop & grow. Holly, especially, is most memorable and wonderfully unique. As for Brady-- the villain we loved to hate in Mr. Mercedes? No letdown there, either!While "Finders Keepers" wasn't my favorite King novel, I thought "End of Watch" was the perfect conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy.By the way, while the three novels are best read as a trilogy, King has included enough background in each (without being horribly repetitive) that they could, I suppose, be read as stand alone novels...but you'd be missing out.

This is an excellent edition of a text that works well as a first reading experience for beginning students of ancient Greek. The vocabulary at the back is especially easy to use. The notes are helpful and put the student 'in the picture' as far as the ancient context goes. My students who have completed a course like Hansen and Quinn's elementary Greek course have used this book with profit.

This version would have been great if it was rid of redundant pages. Layout should have been kept simple instead of making 3 separate chapters with repeating contents.

I prefer books rather than kindle editions.

Yet despite numerous studies by linguists, anthropologists and historians of law and of religion, there exists no complete analysis of the oath which seeks to explain the strategic function that this phenomenon has performed at the intersection of law, religion and politics.

The oath seems to define man himself as a political animal, but what is an oath and from where does it originate? Taking this question as its point of departure, Giorgio Agamben's book develops a pathbreaking 'archaeology' of the oath. Via a firsthand survey of Greek and Roman sources which shed light on the nexus of the oath with archaic legislation and acts of condemnation, Agamben recasts the birth of the oath as a decisive event of anthropogenesis, the process by which mankind became humanity. Lloyd, a professor at MIT, works in the vanguard of research in quantum computing: using the quantum mechanical properties of atoms as a computer. He contends that the universe itself is one big quantum computer producing what we see around us, and ourselves, as it runs a cosmic program. According to Lloyd, once we understand the laws of physics completely, we will be able to use small-scale quantum computing to understand the universe completely as well. In his scenario, the universe is processing information. The second law of thermodynamics (disorder increases) is all about information, and Lloyd spends much of the book explaining how quantum processes convey information. The creation of the universe itself involved information processing: random fluctuations in the quantum foam, like a random number generator in a computer program, produced higher-density areas, then matter, stars, galaxies and life. Lloyd's hypothesis bears important implications for the red-hot evolution–versus–intelligent design debate, since he argues that divine intervention isn't necessary to produce complexity and life. Unfortunately, he rushes through what should be the climax of his argument. Nevertheless, Lloyd throws out many fascinating ideas.
