About the Author

Barbara Teller Ornelas and Lynda Teller Pete are fifth generation, and widely acclaimed, Navajo weavers and sisters. Together they teach Navajo weaving workshops at museums, galleries, and guilds. Barbara is internationally renowned for her fine tapestry weaving. She has been artist in Residence at the Heard Museum and the British Museum in London and has served as an ambassador for Navajo weaving, culture, and tradition in arts exchange programs in Peru, England, Uzbekistan, and beyond. Lynda won her first prize in weaving at age 12, and continued weaving while she received her degree in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University. She has been a weaver full-time since 2010.

Wonderful and current history of Navajo weaving. A must for any Weaver

I loved the family history behind this wonderful art of Navajo weaving.

Very good book.

This was a gift for someone with many Navaho rugs. They seemed to like it.

This is a great book. I love the way that the stories are told. The stories provide rich detail about the weavers and provide insight to Navajo culture.

Great book love it!

What do I love about this book? Let's see...The intro to each person, listing her (or his) clans, and then a paragraph naming their whole extended families. That is real, and maybe comes from the fact of the authors being Navajo/Diné.That each piece is short, not trying to tell everything, but making some good and consistent points. It seems like every person in the Navajo Nation must weave.They seem to be so monumentally prolific!!! and all award winners. And no one keeps her work, it is all destined for sale and goes... As a weaver, that feels kind of heartbreaking, but then I think how little of my own work I have, and it makes some sense.I got a big education in how many shows there are, how many places giving award recognition, how many museums actively buying, what a huge network of acclaim and support there is. It took a long time to build all that. And while they only barely touched on it, I could not help but think that those early trading post buyers who were so demanding did them a big favor. I can easily imagine that conversation in the ngo world of Guatemala, where any number of people do not want to work with fair trade organizations, for instance, because it is too hard, too demanding. Now Navajo rugs are famous for extraordinary quality, and I can only wonder if that would be as true if those controversial traders had never been part of the picture.I love the rug section in the back, of course. I have heard all those names forever, or maybe only some of them, but never learned enough to make distinctions. That is a beautiful section.The photography, of course. Even I might be able to take beautiful pictures in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, but Joe has outdone himself. Makes me want to pack up and go. Or skip packing and just go.I love their voice, how they talk about the people and the work.I cry again for things governments are capable of. And I think the way those stories were included, clearly but not whacking anyone over the head, was perfect.I'm very glad to have met both authors in Cusco last year. It adds a lot, of course. I want to see them again. In fact, I want them to come here to Guatemala and talk with weavers here about their story, their history, and give hope and some practical ideas about ways things can move forward here.I'm inspired and awed. Not bad.

As a long time weaver, living in the West, I cannot remember a time when I didn’t love Navajo weavings. In books, and museum exhibits and car trips through the Southwest I have studied and admired the serene designs, elegant color choices and skilled weavings. I have read many books about the Navajo people and Navajo weaving but for the first time this is a book written about and by Navajo weavers.Written by two sisters, this is an intimate book. It takes a few chapters to understand how deeply all these weavers are connected to each other, their people and their history. Aunts, grandmothers and grandchildren, brothers and in-laws, these are families that have been weaving for many generations and take their heritage seriously. Family history and Navajo culture and history are interwoven with chapters that focus on the life stories of about 30 individual weavers or tool makers. Some are involved in the labor intensive work of raising and sheering sheep and collecting plants for vegetable dyes for the yarn they spin. Others have adapted by using commercial yarn or dyes. The focus is tradition but the book ends with several chapters on much younger family members who are carrying on the family arts and crafts in unique and sometimes less traditional ways.As with all Thrums books, beautiful photos complement the text. There are careful photos of weavings in progress and of award winning rugs. There are photos of the weavers and their homes and the beautiful Southwestern landscape. This is a hopeful book looking backward and forward. It is both educational and enjoyable; a well rounded story.

I just got this book today, and I can honestly say it's one of my best book purchases. Even though the cover has a little bit of a retro feel, the drum patterns are modern. I'm learning something new on every page.Chapter 1 starts assuming you know nothing about Ableton, and you don't really need to use Ableton at all for this book, but it quickly gets out of that. Once you get into the grooves in Chapter 2, which is most of the book, it's great. Grooves are built up slowly, one or two elements at a time, and the thought behind BPM, timing, velocity, and sound choices are all thoroughly explained. The patterns groove from the get-go, even with just the kick, snare, and hats.Read the other reviews for help with the "missing files" issue. I recommend installing the pack by double clicking the ALP file instead of trying to use the racks from the folder directly, but you'll want to hold on to the rest of those files to have the individual the samples. If you're having trouble with the racks, keep at it or email support, because they're definitely worth it. Also, the download link is on the first page (the one that you skip because it sticks to the cover). Took me forever to find.

Apparently a few things were updated while this book remained the same, so it is difficult to get started. To use this book to the best advantage, you need to download Ableton LIve from one place (the link provide with the book doesn't work) and a library of drum kits from another online site. First, the starting instuctions for Ableton Live don't match the installation, so you have to figure out where you are. Then the drum kit library doesn't include the initial drum kit you need to go through the 'Getting Started' section. So already, you're abandoned in the midst of this frankly awkward software. Ableton Live is not like you can transfer your knowledge from the DAW you've always used. Maybe after I can get over all the missing information, I'd find some value. Not now.

The book is good, but the missing files drive me insane. How can you provide incomplete excersize package? This SUCKS. I wouldn't of bought it if I knew

Are you getting the message "Missing Files" from Ableton upon trying to do the first exercise? This is because the author renamed the "House Kit" to "Disco Kit" and Ableton can't figure this out on its own how to find the files.Here's the fix: Click the "missing files" error message at the bottom left of the app window. A "locate missing files" section will appear in the upper right corner. Set Ableton to do an auto-search inside the folder from the book you've downloaded from Halleonard.com. Ableton will find 13 of the 16 missing files automatically and replace them correctly. The last 3 files you have to manually locate within the folder and manually drag and drop onto the Missing files section. All the sounds are there for the kit, you "just" have to locate them and drag them onto the files(see the attached photos in this review if you don't know which subfolder to go into to locate the correct files). Go to "EDM Groove Samples" then into the subfolder "House" then into both the "Snares" and "Hi hats" subfolders. The 3 last files are located in those folders.Final step: The file names for the 3 last files are messed up and probably won't make sense but just trust me on this one: "Snare 1.wav" from the should be dragged onto the missing files slot called "House Kit 4.aif". You should place "Snare 2.wav" onto the missing file slot called "House Kit 8.aif. "Hi-hat loose.aif" should be dragged onto the missing "House Hi Hat 1" in the missing files section.Once you've dragged the .wav file onto the missing file slot in Ableton, Ableton will create an .asd file for the sound within the downloaded folder from Halleonard and you should be able to trigger and use all the samples within the House/Disco Kit.It took me some time to figure this out but I really hope this helps. It's really an amazing book that you don't want to miss out on!

Amazing book if you want drum patterns for electronic music as well as other styles this is the book for you.My only complaint is the drum patterns can be a bit hard to read in gray scale.

It has everything it says it has plus some multimedia content to download and some nice explanations.

This book may have been good at one time. Now it's junk.The files currently on their janky website don't match with the lessons in the book. The printed install instructions also don't match. Additionally, some of the kits use features that are only available in the top tier Ableton Live Suite packages. If you own Ableton Live Standard, they will not load. There's no reason to use those features (Operator and Sampler) instead of the simple samples used elsewhere.Without accurate functioning drum kits, all of the tutorials are meaningless.Natalie in support at Hal Leonard was no help in solving these problems. Communication was nearly non existent.After months of getting no where with Hal Leonard, I tried emailing Josh Bess directly. He never responded.Avoid this book, and any book published by Hal Leonard that requires digital files. They have no interest in maintaining them.

Great book. Gives plenty of examples to work on.

This book really opened my eyes to the effects of having a Narcissistic parent. It is in plain language which would be relate-able to the average person.

I have read many of the books regarding Narcissism, I think this book and the other book from J.H. Simon, same author is the most helpful one, especially when you are in the trap, we need to get out of the way by something straight to the points rather than keep listening the similar stories from authors.

Wow now I know there are others out there that experienced the pain of growing up in a Narcissist family. It exactly described the roles each family member played. It was so apparent the roles each of us played. I hope this book helps others to save themselves.

I literally just put the book down and had to write a positive review. I read the first book, "How to Kill a Narcissist," and immediately had to read this one. The writer is spot on, and opened my eyes to what's been going on my whole life. The first book focuses more on the narcissist, whereas this one focuses more on narcissim itself. It's perfect for anyone raised by narcissists that got into narcissistic relationships thereafter. I can already feel like I have the power to move forward and change positively.

I see so many of these books that are simply generic (and often wrong) "self-help" genre books. Some authors do have an academic background, but NO therapy practice or experience. And many don't even reflect much (if any) academic background.(Just WHO is the author?)Grasping if it is an actual therapeutical value (like CBT of SBFT or clinical hypnotherapy) or just psycho-babble is a large problem.Based on that alone, could NOT recommend.

I own about 10 books on cast iron that contain recipes....this is the best one yet! I really enjoy the fact that many of the recipes come from Lodge family members, and they share some of the family history, as well. My only complaint is that you need to search through the recipes for what cast iron piece(s) to use. I also wish that you could search in the index by cast iron type. As much as I would love to own every piece of cast iron that Lodge makes, I do not! :)

This is an excellent cookbook! I especially liked the section on Lodge family favorites. A lot of these recipes took me back to my grandmother's kitchen, and an old great Aunt that a cast-iron coal burning stove until the late 70s. Excellent recipes and fun information about the sources and Lodge family anecdotes to go with each recipe. It's also very cool to see what parts of the country these recipes come from.

I didn't really intend to buy this particular book--I simply clicked on a button to see how much it was selling for and the next screen to come up congratulated me for purchasing "The Cast Iron Skillet." I inhaled a long time after I realized what had happened because it wasn't in my very Limited Budget, but after using it for the past few weeks, I'm proud I made that mistake. It's one of the most useful books in my kitchen.

I have only used one of the recipes so far and it was excellent. The book is well layed out and the recipes are well written and easy to use. I recommend this book for anyone that enjoys using a cast iron skillet but you can use the recipes in other cookware too. Enjaoy

Very nice recipes but a lot of them call for specific spices that one usually doesn't keep in their pantry. I will say that I've bought some of the spices and the food tastes first class. It was worth the money.

it sounded like this would be a bunch of fill-in-the-blank letters for kids to send home from camp. It is, of sorts, but was not as expected.While there is a place to put an address and there are fold lines to send these as is, i'd be surprised if the flimsy paper held up in the mail. You're meant to fold them over and secure with the included stickers, but that leaves the sides open to catch & tear on other, more sturdy mail pieces.Also, this really reads more like traditional Mad Libs. The 'instructions' say that you can have a friend read the categories (adjective, adverb, etc.) or fill them in yourself. I expect the former will be more fun than the latter, but, because the 'letters' are very specific situations, they won't give the recipient much information at all.I don't know if my niece will send these as letters, though I expect she may enjoy them as one should enjoy Mad Libs with friends.Still, it felt somewhat redundant to have bought this along with the Camp Daze Mad Libs. They're pretty much the same sort of thing.Not worth returning, I still think they are fun, but I wouldn't make them a staple for campers and don't expect to buy this again. I'll just buy the Camp Daze Mad Libs for future campers.
